A recent performance from Tyler Childers, whose emotionally raw, introspective music is featured throughout this episode. His character-driven, narrative-based songs are evocative of some of the struggles experienced throughout the Appalachian region. His song, “Nose on the Grindstone,” about a miner’s struggles with addiction, is particularly poignant.

Episode director, Morgan Fallon, a native West Virginian, took Tony for a real ride on these rock bouncers.
Tony at Lost Creek Farm, where he sampled various West Virginia classics, including vinegar pie, pawpaw ice cream with candied wildflowers, buttermilk-poached trout with fresh-picked rhubarb, sweet-corn chowder, buttermilk-fried rabbit with fresh maple syrup, venison with a chicory-root rub and chanterelle mushrooms.
After a long day of shootin’ pumpkins and climbing vertical cliffs in some rock bouncers, it is always nice to fall asleep with some light reading.
